Mix it Up: Modern Touches in Traditional Rooms

Looking to bring an exciting edge to your traditional style? Consider mixing it up a bit with a few modern touches.
At first this may seem odd, especially if you have always tended towards a more formal décor, but modern furnishings and accessories can be quite stately in their own right.
The following rooms will certainly give you a few
beautiful interior design ideas you can replicate in your own home.

Set amongst a highly formal backdrop, a traditional style marble table plays nicely with the curvy elegance of four modern Panton dining chairs. The stark white appearance of the room gives a modern feel, but is contrasted by heavy moulding and paneled walls.

Modern furnishings and a single industrial style pendant light look quite at home with the paneled walls, ornate fireplace mantel and brass surround, and an antique painting. The colors, while highly contrasted with the white walls, are balanced by the patterned area rug which incorporates all the colors of the room.

A sleek modern table, contemporary waterfall light fixtures and a black and white modern print of Marilyn Monroe contrast beautifully with the ornately decorative wall panels and friezes and grand formality of the room itself.

Traditional surroundings of heavily patterned turquoise at the windows, walls and on the furnishings are set off nicely by a beige velvet sofa and modern metal and glass coffee table.

The ornate ceiling medallion and mouldings along with the traditional styling of the fireplace surround play off the modern chandelier and furniture such as the black Barcelona chairs backing the white leather sofa. A zebra rug ties all together nicely.

The very traditional paneled walls of this room are accompanied by several modern elements such as the acrylic coffee table and artwork above the sofa. Other furniture is mixed equally between modern and traditional pieces.

A historical portrait above the fireplace, a wingback chair, and traditional rug and accessories are mixed with a modern box sofa, metal box coffee table, and modern light fixture. This room offers a diversified collection of differing elements perfect for inspiring home decorating ideas.

Modern upholstered Kartell Mademoiselle chairs with transparent legs sit at a formal dining table with a leather wingback chair sitting watch. The globes in the fireplace add a modern artsy touch to the room.

  1. Couldn't agree more - and I adore that last dining room especially. The chocolate walls with that fantastic upholstery on the chairs is very yummy.

I think that the opposite holds true, as well. That antique furniture looks fabulous in modern, crisp spaces. All about contrast!

  2. Great examples of stylish modern and traditional mixes. I am also planning to do a similar mix for my new place, to give it a bit of an edge.

  4. I really like the James Rixner design. It could be a staple in many new luxury homes. Good thing there's a link to Rixners portfolio.
